Not sure if i made my point.
I went down ONCE... picked up as much as i could carry..... dropped the
coppers etc... got more gems/jewels and continued doing this until i had
35000 gems and 35000 jewels and 35000 gold in my grubby hands before i went
back upstairs.

I managed to do this a seocnd time and filled my gems and jewel lockers
completely...

This is the way to do it. Well, at least this would be my technique.

1) join the closest guild - paladin/mercenary - if you didn't plan on this,
you can (if you meet their criteria) join later
1a) map out the fastest route
2) drop everything you don't need
3) cast spells, drink potions, use items, whatever to pump up your strength
&
speed (a trip to lucky's may be good)
4) take ONLY gems/jewels because they're worth the most & can be traded in
at
typically 30 GP per at the D&P. Some dungeon denizens will only accept
gems/jewels for certain special weapons...

And, of course, take the great wrym back to Der Rathskeller's.

Regarding the River Stonz (Styx and Stonz....)

Wait till the midnight hour. (that's when my love comes tumbling down)
Anytime between midnight and 1am will do.
Give the ferryboat person 2 copper pieces.
