Greetings!

I noticed that I am in the middle of a quite large rewrite of a section
in the FAQ, and thus I am unable to post smaller updates in awhile.

So, for those interested, I have pasted the small Ultima Underworld
review to the end of this message
(will go into section 6.11).

Sincerely, Robert Hagenström

ULTIMA UNDERWORLD

Amongst the different branching Ultima games were released during, what
I wish to refer to as,
"the golden age" of Origin Systems (which is sadly gone now), two games
stood out: Ultima
Underworld 1 and 2. These games were different from anything Origin had
done before (System
Shock came later) and different from any previous Ultima game. They
featured state-of-the-art
3d graphics, with lighting effects, physics, complex maps and it was
all huge and never done
before (and frankly, never done after either). As with Dungeon Master,
since this was the
first time gamers saw these kinds of graphics, the immersion was
immense. And though the
setting of Ultima Underworld was all in just one (although enourmous)
dungeon, the details of
the characters, sub plots and different settings you encountered was
probably deeper than any
game before it. Sadly, this wasn't the case with the sequel, but Ultima
Underworld 1 will
always be a milestone of CRPG games (even though it had action oriented
combat).
