Interesting. I just took it at face value... The kid was liberated from the Matrix and wanted Neo to know he was in Zion now. But if he wanted to send a message that Zion is also fake, then "There is no spoon" would be a great message to send.... There is STILL no spoon.
Here's something to think about... Let's assume the machines took over extremely quickly and planted everyone in the Matrix around 2020. If Neo is the 6th "One" and there are elders in Zion in their 60's and 70's. That means The Matrix is at least (65 * 6) = 390 years old, so the year is actually closer to 2450. Plus there's that first generation where "entire crops were lost."
Of course, as they implied with Cipher in the first movie, they may have erased everone's memory and re-inserted them into The Matrix, in which case the whole thing could've happened within a couple of decades, and the glitch replicates very quickly... every couple of years or so. Some people born in Zion with a false memory of being in Zion their whole lives. This could easily be accomplished by just erasing the past 600 days of their memories and resetting the program to that time. Shades of Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep / Blade Runner.
The computers realized they had to give you a choice, but they never said that the choice was real. As long as you could imagine that you made it, you'd be happy.
Did anyone else think it was cheesy that ghosts & vampires were glitches in the Matrix?
On an unrelated topic, do you think there's any chance the Wachowski brothers read this list?
