I've always had trouble with stories where you couldn't trust people you formerly trusted... Sometimes it works as a betrayal, but otherwise the story loses it's center... Who do you trust? It becomes arbitrary and the main character's point of view loses it's focus.
If anything anyone tells you can be a lie, then why bother doing anything to help anyone?
It's possible she was clueing him in to certain things... by giving him a red candy, by leaving just before an Agent attacked. He asked whether or not he could trust her and she basically said "you have to make that decision." Is there any point where he does? He just sort of goes along with what she told him to do because that was the only lead he had.
I think The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman pulled this off much better. She had to fulfil her destiny without knowing that she was fulfilling her destiny.
