I also wanted to respond to a couple of posts by Mark. In one you
calculate the year as being closer to 2450 based on how many "Ones" there
have been, multiplied by how old the oldest citizens of Zion seem to be. A
fair assumption, but if you accept the idea that Zion is part of the
Matrix, that calculation doesn't necessarily mean anything. There's
nothing that says time in the Matrix passes at the same rate that it does
in the real world. In fact, being in the Matrix is often compared to
having a dream by a number of characters in the movies, and time in dreams
usually goes much faster than the actual time that has passed while you're
sleeping. Another bit of information that you wouldn't know unless you
played the game, apparently the previous Zion only lasted 72 hours before
being destroyed. This is according to a bum-type character that the game's
protagonists meet in a subway, which, if you believe him is a "spectator",
outside of the normal operations of the Matrix, and able to observe the
goings-on from a objective viewpoint. Of course, it's also possible that
he's just a crazy old alky, but if the Wachowskis took the time to put him
in the game, I would assume he's to be taken at face value.
Also, in the Matrix: Reloaded article you have on your site you make
reference to a character called "Kain". There was no Kain in the movie,
but from the description you give him, that of being the new operator on
the Nebuchadnezzar you are most likely talking about the character named
Link. Otherwise, a fine article.
