Cain is the character that Agent Smith takes over at the very beginning
and sends back to the "real world" - the guy in the coma with Neo at
the end.
I'll try to avoid getting into another Matrix chat here, but my
impression was that things only make sense if the "real world" was
simulated, but that isn't how the plot is going to work out. I'll give
them artistic license for that if they want to take it.
I enjoyed the movie - particularly the 5¢ tour through Western
philosophy vis-a-vis free will...
