It's not uncommon for programmers to keep a copy of what they're working
on, it's simple paranoia. There's always a risk of fire, theft, etc. and
you would be out months or years of work if the only backups were
on-site. Ken and I thought we had backups of the 8bit as well but they
either deteriorated or we kept the wrong disks. There were at least a
dozen Apple][ floppies for the source and about half a dozen Atari disks
for the art and tools. The PC Dungeon fit on 2 floppies with the C compiler.
At the end there was no Datasoft to archive anything. I have no idea why
Datasoft was bought by Software Toolworks, they seemed to have absolutely
no interest in any of their products or projects and laid off
everyone. Ken and I worked under contract at home for only a few months.
We suspected they weren't exactly a legit outfit but what their game was we
never figured out. Toolworks went public and its owner made mucho bucks,
Datasoft's former owners were given stock they couldn't sell. It was worth
millions on paper but as soon as they went public it was worthless. They
destroyed Datasoft's inventory including duplication master disks, they
said their "scientists" could dupe anything. They then found out they
couldn't duplicate the simplest protected disks and no orders for any of
Datasoft's titles were ever filled again.
Just waiting for a nod to release it. Phil are you there?
