I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I suspect it has to do with time spent in the dungeon v. time spent outside... too bad you can't get back into the City so we could see if I'm right. I'd also take a thorough inventory of my items to make sure nothing like the reforged ring was in my posession, something that may cause me to get darker.
