Scawen Roberts and Eric Bailey left Lionhead Studios three years ago to
"garage code" their own game. They've just released their first commercial
version of it, titles "Live for Speed S1" and it's an incredibly impressive
piece of code.
So there you have it... with 1 artist, 1 coder and 1 musician, expect at
least three years for a home grown product without financial backing to
reach beta status (oh, and these people were working full time on it, not
just weekends as Philip Price mentioned he did for awhile).
/Robert
PS. I'm a registered Live for Speed S1 player, so if you ever see someone
with the user id "eobet" log onto a game server (note that it's different
from nicks), that's me!

from the list at about the same time sometime last year. It occurs to me
that such might not be a coincidence. :) Maybe they're working on the
recreation and don't wanna be pestered every hour and a half about what the
status is.
