I believe he is responsible for all story and even all story approval in
the novels, even though they may bulldoze them aside in the films. It was
also my understanding that Chewie was supposed to be a Wookie prince very
much along the same lines as Aragorn which would have also made more sense
in Wookies going to war for them. "Splinter in the Mind's Eye" novelized
by Alan Dean Foster was Lucas' original story for the sequel. It was made
to be low budget because he wasn't sure he'd be able to get financing for a
Star Wars sequel but he still wanted to complete the series.
