Ana,
You don't need a joystick to play the games. Use the
I, J, K and L keys to move around on the Atari and C64
versions. Use the cursor keys for the Amiga, ST and PC
versions.
Basically the Atari and C64 offer you versions of both
The City and The Dungeon. For the Amiga, ST and PC
you're limited to just The City. Most people seem to
like the Atari 8-bit versions the best so I'd start
with them but the C64, Amiga and ST versions are also
good.
The AR FAQ has a section on emulating the various
versions of AR. You can get it from:

Most emulators allow you to do snapshots of the
emulators current state which means that you don't
need to mess around with character disks - makes
emulating the games a lot easier.
