Tutorial?
All I remember was that if you sailed due West from the starting point,
you would reach a "Trainer" island that had all the important stuff on
it -- a village, a gold mine, and a river. Nothing so interactive as a
tutorial, but it served it's purpose.
I always bought too many men, not enough goods, so I usually ended up
slaughtering the indians after failing to impress them with my
matches...sadly, I hear how things went in real life, too.
It's amazing how many of those older games seem much more open than
games today. Critics hold Grand Theft Auto in such high esteem for
letting you wander around a city. Fifteen years ago I was discovering
new continents, treking cross country in wagons, and making a life for
myself in an alien world all without a CD-ROM drive!
